Our Instructors

Rachel Wade was born in Jamaica and started illustrating and painting at an early age. Having dual citizenship she moved to England to further her studies.

She completed a first class honours B.A. Degree in Animation at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, Surrey England in 2004 and returned to Jamaica to pursue her career as an illustrator, graphic designer , animator and painter.

Rachel’s work ranges from pen illustrations to acrylic on canvas, She has exhibited in various
exhibitions across the Caribbean and Jamaica, and was awarded a gold medal and merit in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Exhibition in 2006.In 2007 she was awarded a merit in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Exhibition and National Gallery Bi Annual Exhibition and was awarded 1st place in the CPTC Digital Arts festival for her piece, "Imagination”.

She is part of the creative team at Sutherland Wade Associates a corporate Graphic Design company. Rachel is a freelance illustrator and Lectures part time at the Edna Manley College of the Visual Arts. She offers art tutorials and Illustrates for the Ministry of Education. Her studio and gallery is located in the hills of St. Andrew and can be viewed by appointment.

Artist's Statement

"My work continues to be a synthesis of influences, born as much out of process as concept. There is a developing synthesis between line, space, volume and tension, evolving from the movement and rhythm of the people seen in my daily life. The works thematically explore the human condition, the paradoxes of the society and the contradictions very often inherent in the individual." - Raymond Watson

Biography

Born in London in 1954, and schooled at Kingston College, Jamaica, 1966 to 1972, he attended The Jamaica School of Art from 1977 to 1981, graduating with a Diploma in Sculpture.

Raymond has lived and worked in Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and London, and has exhibited in the Caribbean, The United States, South America and England. He has mounted public sculptures in London, Kingston and Port of Spain, as well as being represented in private collections worldwide. In 1990 he along with brother Basil Watson mounted “Sculpture in the Park” an outdoor exhibition of life-size sculptures in New Kingston, Jamaica.

In 1994 he returned to London and subsequently mounted “The First Child” commissioned in 1998 at Max Roach Park, Brixton. The sculpture was commissioned to commemorate the “Soweto Massacre” in South Africa during Apartheid. He has since returned to live and work in Jamaica.
